Massage is the working surface, deeper layers of muscle and connective tissue using a variety of techniques, to help function, promote relaxation and well-being as well as aid in the healing process. The word comes from the French language massage "friction of kneading", or from Latin word massa meaning "mass, dough."

Massage involves working and acting on the body with pressure—structured, unstructured, stationary, or moving—tension, motion, or vibration, done manually or with mechanical aids. Target tissues may include fascia, skin joints or other connective tissue, as well as the lymphatic vessels, or organs of the gastrointestinal system. There are over eighty different recognized massage modalities. The reason for most to seek out massage therapy is the clinical effectiveness.

In professional settings, massage involves the client being treated while lying on a massage table, sitting in a massage chair. The massage client may be fully or partly unclothed. Parts of the body may be covered with towels or sheets.
